Ralph Schraivogel

Ralph Schraivogel a graphic artist born in 1960 in Lucerne. Schraivogel now a resident of Zurich has taught Design at Zurich’s School of Design as well as Berlin’s University of the Arts. Schraivogel’s ‘style and technique’ can be described as unique, a visual explosion of color, content, image, and lettering. I will quote a snippet from his bio as it is articulated more elegantly than I could express. “His posters illustrate how he erases the differences between lettering and image: image becomes lettering, lettering becomes image. In other words, seeing and reading become one and the same…”  Schraivogel’s innovative posters convey messages via optical wonder. Some of his techniques include; collapsing perspectives, typographical alienation, ornamentation, complex overlapping, and fading.
Ralph Schraivogel has been the recipient of many awards some include the Gold Medal winner at the Warsaw Biennial (1994), Moscow Biennial, Golden Bee (1994), Chaumont Poster Festival (1997), Ningbo International Poster Exhibition (2001, 2003), Art Directors Club New York (2003), Hong Kong International Poster Triennial (2007), and Teheran Poster Biennial (2007).
Here are a few examples of Ralph Schraivogel’s eclectic work.

This really is the main theme of the class... how to use Type as image effectively.
