Katherine McCoy was born on October 12, 1945. She is
a renowned educator and graphic artist. She graduated from Michigan State
University in 1967 where she studied Industrial design. She has held many
different teaching positions over her illustrious career. Some of them include
teaching at the Royal College of Art, London, Cranbrook Academy of Art and Illinois
Institute of Technology's Institute of Design. While at Cranbrook Academy,
where she started her teaching career, she helped to reinvent the program there
with minimal structure or assignments. Though her style was sometimes
criticized she has produced some of the world’s best known designers. In 1991
McCoy along with some of her students produced the book “Cranbook Designs”
which highlighted the work done by students at the Cranbrook Academy. She
currently consults on communication design and post professional design education.

ReplyDeleteI find I can be sympathetic to this style of teaching. Finding the right balance between structure and freedom is key.
