Saul Bass

Saul Bass was a graphic designer and filmmaker, perhaps best known for his design of film posters and title sequences. During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, and Martin Scorsese. He started his career in Hollywood doing print work for film ads, until he collaborated with filmmaker Otto Preminger to design a film poster for his 1954 film Carmen Jones. He became well-known in the film industry after creating the title sequence for Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955. For Alfred Hitchcock, Bass designed memorable title sequences, inventing a new type of kinetic typography, for North by Northwest, Vertigo (working with John Whitney), and Psycho. Bass also designed some of the most iconic corporate logos in North America, including the original AT&T “bell” logo in 1969, as well as their later “globe” logo in 1983. He also designed Continental Airlines’ 1968 “jetstream” logo and United Airlines’ 1974 “tulip” logo which have become some of the most recognized logos of the era.

Storm Thorgerson

As I looked through the list of Graphic Designers I realized that I have never heard of any of them. I then decided to search some of their work on Google Images, many of them I found their work to be something I didn’t really care for as much as others would because of my taste. However when I came across Storm Thorgerson I really enjoyed looking through his work. His pictures seem very abstract and have so much detail put into them, definitely something I would never be able to do. His work is simple yet complex and I just stared and looked at all of the details. He was Best known for his work for rock artists such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. These were a few of my favorites:

My name is Jamie and this is my last year here at Albertus and I will be graduating in May with my Bachelors degree in business management. I currently work a full time and part time job and then I take three classes so I can be done faster. I wanted to take graphic design because I am not very artistic and I would like to learn how to be more creative because I think it will really help me in the long run with my career. I am hoping to design brochures, cards, pamphlets, etc. I really want to be able to create nice looking work that looks professional and creative.

Paul Rand

As I made my way through the links on the syllabus I found a name that I’ve heard before, Paul Rand. After further investigation of how/why I would know or recognize this name. As it turns out he was a local artist. Paul Rand was famous for his corporate logos. Rand was born in Brooklyn and studied at Parsons School of Design before coming to Yale University. Rand was one of the first to emphasize cleanliness, readability, and objectivity in his work a method that would be come to known as the Swiss style which makes sense because he was influences by European magazines. As you can see from the logos below many are still used today and are easily identifiable.  Paul Rand died in 1996 in Norwalk, CT. a true modernist.

Graphic Design--Intro

Hello All, my name is Steve. There are many things I would like to learn in this class. I would like to learn 3D effects, editing, and moving and removing elements within a photo. I just finished Prof. Nevins’ digital photography class and enjoyed it immensely. Choosing this class seemed like the natural progression. I also feel this Graphic Design class is agreeable with my major. When I read the syllabus I noticed we will be creating book covers. The book cover assignment is the one I am looking forward to the most. One of my goals in life is to write a book. I am currently a senior and will finish my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management in March. All the best everyone-looking forward to it.

Friday, October 25, 2013

Class begins Monday, October 28th and runs 8 weeks until Wednesday December 18th.  The main thing to do this week is to get all of the systems up and running.

-Read through the class syllabus linked from the list of links in the upper right of the blog.

-Post a bio and hello to this blog.  Include a statement of what you hope to learn in this class.

-Secure a copy of Photoshop Elements 12 or Photoshop CC.  Any version after Photoshop 5 will do, and that goes back a long way.  If you have ordered it from an online vendor and are waiting for it, you can download a free copy good for 30 days from http://adobe.com/downloads  After you get your copy, just input the serial number when you start it up.  You could get by for the next 8 weeks by getting a copy of Elements for 30 days then Photoshop CC for another 30 days.... Once you start using it though I am sure you'll want to have a copy for yourself.

-Post a 1 paragraph review of a graphic design artist found either at the Museum of Graphic Design or through one of the links on the syllabus.  Include an image from their work.  This will count as 1 attendance record and your Bio will count as the other for the first week.  After that, your creative work that you'll post will count toward attendance.  There are two attendance records generated each week.

-Watch some of the videos on how to use Elements and Photoshop, posted in the syllabus.

-Let me know if you have any concerns or if you don't know how to do something.  There is a video on how to post to this blog in the list of class links in the upper right hand corner where other important links are located.

Looking forward to getting this class launched!
